With the exception of the WCC and its trio of Gonzaga, St. Mary’s and BYU, many of the teams leading the mid-major and low-major conferences out West are relative unknowns. One team has won more games than it’s ever won at the Division I level. Another is leading the nation in scoring … while yet another has the nation’s leading scorer in Tyler Harvey, pictured above. Two teams are clear-cut favorites, while most of the others are battling for a shot at a coveted spot in the NCAA Tournament. As we head toward the final week of the regular season, here’s a primer to bring you up to speed before the conference tournaments get underway.
This is the battle between number one and two in the West Coast Conference, Gonzaga and St. Mary’s. Earlier this season Gonzaga dominated St. Mary’s, 68-47.
The Bulldogs of Gonzaga are ranked No. 3 in the nation and not looking to tarnish their record this season. St. Mary’s, on the other hand, has nothing to lose and hopes to derail the Bulldogs and make a late run in the WCC. Tip-off is at 10 p.m. ET tonight.
OK, we’ll be honest. The slate this weekend isn’t spectacular. But there are three key games that you’re going to want to pay attention to, including a Saturday afternoon matchup between two teams in the Big 12 that are going to get to know each other quite well – they play twice in the final two weeks of the season.
