Still Perfect: Kentucky survives in thriller

Kentucky came into this game on a high after the dominating West Virginia in the Sweet 16.  That high crashed when this game against Notre Dame tipped off. Notre Dame kept Kentucky under control only letting them have a largest lead of two points in the first half, while the Irish’s largest lead was only four points.  Notre Dame is the closest and most physical opponent Kentucky has faced during the NCAA tournament.

The first half had 10 ties and 13 lead changes and at the half the score was tied at 31.  The second half started with Kentucky pulling away to a small lead of five points, then Zach Auguste and Pat Connaughton from Notre Dame got on a roll to take the lead again.  It was a back and forth game the rest of the way.  At the end the Wildcats held off the Irish and continued their winning steak, 68-66.

Instant Analysis: No. 3 Notre Dame escapes

Nothing like a little scare to get the tournament underway … unless you’re a Notre Dame fan, that is. With a 14-7 run as the clock ticked away, Northeastern had a chance to either tie or take the lead with less than a minute to play. But Notre Dame’s Jerian Grant tied up Northeastern’s Quincy Ford to force a turnover and seal a 69-65 win for the Irish.

The game was close throughout. Northeastern trailed by just four at the half in its first tournament appearance since 1991.
