In a widely seeded affair at Nationwide Arena, No. 4 Maryland grinded out a win over No. 13 Valparaiso, 65-62. Valpo came up short in the first half and, while keeping the Terrapins in reach, never got back into against a Maryland team shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc.
The Louisville versus UC Irvine showdown was definitely one of the most back and forth games of the tournament so far. The largest lead the entire game was only seven points. With six ties and nine lead changes, the game ended with a one-and-one foul opportunity for Louisville’s freshman Quentin Snider who sunk both attempts and sealed the deal for the Cardinals ticket to the next round.
Virginia was able to survive Belmont’s streaky shooting and win 79-67. Belmont led early in this one, but a 13-0 run captured the lead for Virginia and the lead never changed hands after that. Malcolm Brodgen led Virginia with 16 in the first half, but went cold and missed all of his shots in the second. Belmont’s Craig Bradshaw was hot from deep as he made 5 of his 9 threes, but whenever Belmont tried to close the gap, Virginia weathered the storm and started to make plays. Belmont did not cower down from the 2-seed Virginia, but they will have to wait another year to claim their first tournament victory.
