If there was a snoozer on Thursday, this one was it. (Sorry, Lafayette.) Villanova, the top seed in the East region, rolled to a 93-52 win over the undermatched Leopards. The 41-point loss for Lafayette was the worst loss in NCAA Tournament history for a team from the Patriot League. Villanova never trailed in the game.
With all of the craziness early in the day, leave it to Arizona to restore some normalcy to everyone’s bracket. The No. 2 seed in the West cruised to a 93-72 win over an overmatched Texas Southern team.
Nothing like a little scare to get the tournament underway … unless you’re a Notre Dame fan, that is. With a 14-7 run as the clock ticked away, Northeastern had a chance to either tie or take the lead with less than a minute to play. But Notre Dame’s Jerian Grant tied up Northeastern’s Quincy Ford to force a turnover and seal a 69-65 win for the Irish.
The game was close throughout. Northeastern trailed by just four at the half in its first tournament appearance since 1991.
